Homework Expectations
A big focus in second grade is increasing independence and responsibility for materials and self-management. Each student is responsible for writing down the weekly spelling words and the daily homework in his or her own agenda.
All students are asked to read for 20 minutes each night, 7 days a week. These minutes can be recorded in the calendar section of your child's agenda. Homework may also include ONE of the following: a math practice page to support skills learned that day, a reading worksheet, or a comprehension response. Students are responsible for showing their parents the agenda and getting it signed nightly. Homework will not be assigned on PTA nights, holidays, or track outs. It will be recommended that nightly reading remain a routine in your home.
Wake County's expectation is that students in second grade spend 20 minutes on homework and another 20 reading. If at any time your child is unable to complete an assignment in the time limit, please just send in a note!
Homework is not graded for accuracy. It is graded for completion. If I find that a student(s) struggled with a skill from their homework, I will go over that skill either individually or as a group. Homework should never be a source of frustration. It should be all about practice!
Parent/Student Journal:
Your child will be writing to you each week about things they have learned, done, and activities from the week. They will come home on Fridays along with Friday Folders. Please be sure to write back to your child on the next page over the weekend. They love reading about what you did in second grade and any hopes and dreams you may have for them for this year! Also don't forget, they can't read cursive just yet, so please use your best print so they can read your notes.
