Standards upon Track-In
I cannot believe this quarter is coming to an end! This has been an exciting new start to a new school year with some fabulous students and amazing parents! I will miss them over track out and my leave! Please remember that after we track back in, I will begin my maternity leave. Rebekah Boehme teaching during the time I will be gone. Attached is a letter from Mrs. Faircloth introducing and welcoming her to SCES. I have had the pleasure of meeting with Ms. Boehme to discuss plans and the uniqueness of this class. I am very confident that she is well prepared and is excited to work with our students. She will soon receive a WCPSS email account, but in the meantime her personal email is [email protected] Although much communication is appreciated through Dojo, please keep in mind that sometimes messages may be overlooked. If there are immediate needs of communication, such as transportation changes, please make sure to receive confirmation. If there is not a response in a timely manner, please call the office to ensure your child is where they need to be. If you have received feedback through Dojo, then no need to call the office. This week you will find your First Quarter Conference form in your child’s Friday Folder. Please fill in 3 sessions that you will be available and rate them, first choice, second choice, and third choice. I will choose a time from those three choices and I send the form back to you in your child’s homework folder. During conferences, we will discuss your child’s reading level, all subject assessments, observation grades, and work habits. All of these factors are considered when determining your child’s grade. I also cannot wait to spend some one-on-one time with my parents to get to know them better! Next week is Custodian Appreciation week. We have an amazing head custodian, Mr. Curtis, who goes above and beyond to take care of both teachers and students. He wears many hats and contributes greatly to our school community. If you would like show your support and appreciation next week on behalf of your family, I will make sure Mr. Curtis receives it! Things to know-

ASSESSMENTS ARE COMPLETE! This week we finished individual reading assessments and we are working with the data from all our assessments thus far in creating a data notebook. I am in the process of teaching your child how to be accountable for their learning and setting reasonable, yet high expectations for their growth in second grade. Please bear with us as we are still holding onto our assessments while we complete this process! Next Friday, your child will be bringing home interims to show how they are doing at the mid-point of the first quarter. This will reflect our common assessments and observations that are made during whole and small group instruction. I understand that many parents will have questions, but I assure you that we will have conferences in the last couple weeks of the first quarter. Look for sign up times coming soon! We are well on our way in learning and observing Life Cycles! Our caterpillars should be arriving soon and we will be able to start observing their life cycle as we learn and compare life cycles of other animals! Things to know-

This week we will be finalizing individual assessments and working on building small focus groups to work on essential skills in reading. I will be sending home information about your child’s reading level with your child’s interim on Sept. 1st. We will have a Math assessment on Thursday using strategies to find and explain how we solved math equations. I will soon be sending home the assessments we have had on reading and math. I am working on a Data Notebook that will allow students to document their scores on assessments. This will take some time to organize with the students before sending home the assessments. I am hoping to be finished by Friday. This will be a great way for students to take responsibility and ownership in their learning, as well as an awesome tool to use for their student lead conferences in the third quarter. This week we will also be starting our science unit in Life Cycles. The students will be overly excited about our caterpillars that will arrive on Wednesday this week. They will get to meet them on Thursday so be sure to ask them about their new friends when they get home! Be sure to check out our Shutterfly account created by our room parents! You can add photos from class visits and field trips. You can also add contact information for other parents to get in touch for outside events! https://mrswilkins2ndgrade201718.shutterfly.com/?email=nwilkins%40wcpss.net Things to know-

Thank you to all the parents who were able to come to Open House last night! I know there was a lot of information to cover so if you have any questions, do not hesitate to email or Dojo me! This has been another great week in room 301! We are continuing to work on routines and procedures to encourage independence among the students. This week it will be important for students to be able to work independently as we conduct individual MClass reading assessments. This will give me the base line data to build reading groups that will guide my instruction in small groups. Things to know-

This has been a fabulous first week here in 2nd Grade! I must say that, so far, these crocodiles have exceeded my expectations with their CHOMPing behavior! We will be exploring some new ways to get in touch with our personal learning styles and student-lead decision making in the future. In the mean-time, we will continue to learn classroom and school wide expectations. We are starting to understand that being cooperative in the classroom yields to freedoms in where we sit and the privileges of using materials that require more responsibility. So far I am impressed by their motivation to earn this choice in the classroom! This week we have learned much about self-control and used it to sit where we want in the classroom. Next week we will incorporate some flexible seating options! Things to know-
Classroom Needs I love how much parent support we have received so far. We have been offered supplies, and volunteers for Room Parents, Friday Folders each week, and anything else we may need. I appreciate all the support, and would like to utilize all interests as the quarter progresses. Next week I will be conducting individual assessments, and once I find the needs for this class, I can start thinking about how to make this happen! Thank you again!! Dates to Remember:
WELCOME!
Dear Parents, Welcome to a new and exciting year in second grade! I am so excited to be starting my second year at SCES and I can’t wait to get to know your child next week! Second grade is such an exciting year full of growth and maturing as students transition from direct instruction to becoming the pilot of their own learning based on their interests as well as learning how they fit into the roles of a learning team. As the first day quickly approaches, there are some nuts and bolts to share with you all.
o I will also need a Friday folder helper! This volunteer will assist me with stuffing Friday folders on Friday from 8:00-8:30 am. o If you are interested in other ways to volunteer (Mystery Reader, and Extra Reading/Math Practice groups) please let me know, and we will find a way for you to be involved in our class! o Our media center is always in need of volunteers! We would love help shelving and checking in/out books. If you are interested in being one of our weekly volunteers, please email Andrea Lyons at [email protected]. Thank you for taking the time to see what to expect for the first week of school. A more detail description of our daily life as a second grader will be given at Open House on August 10th from 5:30-7pm! In the meantime, do not hesitate to email if you any questions!! Enjoy the last bit of your track out!! Mrs. Wilkins Standards Next Week
